Counterfeit Component Risk: How to Protect Your Supply Chain

Component shortages and long lead times have pushed many buyers toward secondary markets and independent distributors to keep production schedules on track. That pressure has also created real openings for counterfeit and gray-market parts to enter the supply chain — components that may be relabeled, reclaimed from e-waste or misrepresented in specification, and that carry serious risk for the programs that end up using them.

For companies building electronics in regulated or mission-critical industries — aerospace, defense, medical — the stakes go well beyond a single failed part. A counterfeit component that slips through can compromise product reliability, trigger compliance violations, and in extreme cases, put end users at risk.

What Counts as a Counterfeit or Gray-Market Component

Counterfeit components take several forms in practice:

  • Relabeled or remarked parts — lower-spec or older components remarked to appear as a different, higher-value part number
  • Reclaimed components — parts pulled from scrapped boards or e-waste, cleaned up and resold as new
  • Cloned or unauthorized parts — components manufactured without license, mimicking a legitimate manufacturer’s design or branding
  • Gray-market parts — components that are technically genuine but sourced outside of authorized distribution channels, often with no verifiable chain of custody or documentation.

Gray-market sourcing occupies a gray area of its own: the parts are often genuine, but the missing chain of custody removes the traceability that makes a part’s authenticity verifiable — exactly the gap counterfeiters rely on.

Why This Risk Has Grown

Several forces have converged to make counterfeit and gray-market risk more pressing over the past few years:

  • Ongoing allocation and shortage cycles for certain component categories, which push buyers toward brokers and secondary markets.
  • Long-tail obsolescence, where legacy or end-of-life parts required for existing programs are no longer available through authorized channels.
  • Increased scrutiny from defense and aerospace primes, who are pushing counterfeit-avoidance requirements further down the supply chain to their contract manufacturers.

For regulated programs, this scrutiny is now a standard requirement. Frameworks like AS6081 (counterfeit avoidance for distributors) and AS5553 (counterfeit avoidance for manufacturers) exist specifically because the industry has seen how quickly a compromised part can move through a supply chain undetected.

How ACDi Protects the Supply Chain

Protecting a program from counterfeit risk starts with sourcing discipline and carries through every stage of receiving and inspection. ACDi’s approach includes:

  • Authorized distribution first — components are sourced through franchised, authorized channels whenever possible, preserving a documented chain of custody back to the original manufacturer.
  • Incoming inspection and verification — parts are visually and X-ray inspected, and where appropriate, electrically tested, to catch inconsistencies before they reach the assembly line.
  • Full lot traceability — every component is tracked by lot and date code, so any downstream issue can be traced back to its source quickly and accurately.
  • Documented sourcing decisions — when a part must be sourced outside standard channels due to obsolescence or allocation, that decision goes through formal documentation and review with customer approval.

This approach aligns with the same quality framework that supports ACDi’s AS9100D, ITAR and NIST 800-171 compliance, with counterfeit avoidance built directly into the broader quality and security systems that govern how components move through the facility.

What Customers Can Do

Customers can reduce counterfeit risk on their end by:

  • Specifying approved manufacturer and distributor lists early in the design and sourcing process
  • Flagging known obsolete or hard-to-source components during NPI, so a sourcing plan can be developed before a shortage becomes urgent
  • Asking their manufacturing partner directly about traceability practices and counterfeit-avoidance certifications

Counterfeit and gray-market components are a real and growing risk, particularly for programs where reliability and compliance carry real consequences. Strong sourcing controls, full traceability and a documented counterfeit-avoidance process are what stand between a supply chain under pressure and a part that shouldn’t be on the board.
